Kids Halloween Costumes! | Sophia's Style

Kids Halloween Costumes
Perhaps you haven't noticed, but we're a bit excited about our new kids Halloween costumes around here. If you think it's bad now, just wait, we're getting more children's costumes in every day, so you'll be seeing tons of new ones showing up on the site! And don't forget to look at the baby costumes, they're crazy cute and so teeny!

In other news, August is essentially here, and that means the kiddies will be back in school soon. Before everyone gets too busy for family time, I have a great idea for a fun family dinner: crepes! I made them last night, and I have no cooking skills to speak of, so I promise it's easy and honestly so much fun.

Here's what you need: 1/2 cup of milk, 1/2 cup of water, 3 eggs, 1 cup of flour, 1/2 tbsp orange flavoring (or you can use a different flavor, you won't really taste it in the crepe, it just gives it a little hint of flavor so they won't taste like flour)

Kids Halloween Costumes
Here's what you do:

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl with a wire wisk, until it's really runny and aerated.

Using a ladel, pour about three quarters of a ladel-full into a greased pan over the stove (on a low heat setting) and sort of swirl the pan around until the whole bottom is covered in a thin layer of batter.

When the very edges of the crepe begin to brown, use a spatula to flip it over.

Wait just ten seconds or so, then use the spatula to take the crepe out and put it on a plate.

Have your kids decide what toppings they want on each crepe, then they can prepare their own! My favorite is sour cream and salmon, with chives. They might like ham and cheese, or peanut butter, you can put just about anything you want on as a topping. For desert, they taste great with jam, or nutella and bananas, or fruit and whip cream.

Enjoy the kids while they're still home for summer, and don't forget to take a look at Sophia's Style children's costumes, you could let the kids get a jump start deciding what they want to be this year!

Girls Halloween Costumes
Fall is on it's way! I'm so excited! It's a bit overcast this morning, and for the first time in weeks, the air feels cool and dry instead of hot and heavy, I love it! In just a few short months, every morning will feel like this! Autumn is my favorite season, I love it when the leaves have all changed colors, then all the sudden they start falling so fast, it's like they're falling in love with the ground... and then I can go walk through them in a killer pair of boots and wear scarves with every outfit. Oh, September and October, I wish you'd come around more than once a year.

It's extra easy to get pumped about changing seasons here at Sophia's Style, we've been getting new girls Halloween costumes that are so much fun and so cute. My favorite are these little baby girl Halloween costumes by Le Top that make animal noises when you squeeze the little button sewn into the cuffs!

How much you'll spend on childcare

How much does childcare cost?

There's no simple answer to this question. It depends on a number of variables, including:

•Where you live

•What type of childcare you choose

•Your child's age

•How many hours a week your child spends in childcare

Where you live is what really determines the bottom line. Nanny care costs significantly less in, say, St. Louis than in San Francisco simply because the cost of living is lower there and so are wages. And daycare — whether in a center or in someone's home — could cost hundreds more per month in a relatively expensive city than in a cheaper area. Your best bet is to check with friends and caregivers near you to determine the going rate for the type of childcare you prefer.

There are costs associated with being your child's full-time caregiver, too — most significantly, loss of your previous income. Read our complete article on the affordability of being a stay-at-home parent.

If you're deciding which kind of childcare to choose, read on to learn out about the relative costs and check out our chart that lists the pros and cons of each option.

How much do daycare centers cost?

Childcare for babies and toddlers
While your child is in the baby and toddler stages, you'll pay more. That's because kids this age need more hands-on care and so the center must hire more caregivers. With an average of $8,150 per year ($679 a month), daycare costs for babies and toddlers in the United States range from $4,388 to $14,647 a year ($366 to $1,221 monthly), according to data from the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies (NACCRRA).

Topping the charts with costs over $11,000 a year ($917 a month) for baby and toddler daycare are the following states, beginning with the most expensive: Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., Minnesota, New York, Wisconsin, Washington, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

And at the bottom of the charts, here are the states with daycare costs below $6,000 a year ($500 a month) for baby and toddler daycare, beginning with the least expensive: Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Texas, Idaho, North Dakota, South Carolina, Kansas, and Alabama.

Childcare for preschoolers
Costs for daycare for preschool-age children are generally lower, averaging $6,423 a year ($535 a month). Depending on where you live, you'll pay anywhere from $3,794 to $10,920 a year ($316 to $910 a month).

The most expensive states for preschool-age care in a childcare center, with costs over $8,000 a year ($667 a month), beginning with the most expensive, are Washington, D.C., Massachusetts, New York, Minnesota, Oregon, Connecticut, Washington, and New Jersey.

The least expensive states for preschool-age care in a childcare center, with costs of less than $5,000 a year ($417 a month), beginning with the least expensive, are Mississippi, Kentucky, Louisiana, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Idaho, West Virginia, South Carolina, and Alabama.

To find out more about daycare options and costs in your area, contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) agency. More than 850 CCR&R agencies throughout the country provide families with information about local childcare options and resources.

On Becoming Baby Wise

I think that many of the more controversial parenting experts are just misunderstood. This is true of Dr. Ferber and his 'cry it out' approach to getting kids to sleep through the night. People who have read his book, Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems, know that it isn't just about letting babies cry all night until they learn to sleep.

On Becoming Babywise is another controversial book that has been described as 'dangerous' and that it could lead to 'poor weight gain' in babies. The AAP News magazine said that Babywise has been linked to 'dehydration, failure to thrive' and many Pediaricians and lactation consultants have come out against the book.

I have to admit that I have also been against this book and have tried to advise parents against 'doing Babywise' and trying the methods described in the book, but that I had never really read it. Instead, I was just basing my recommendation on what I had heard others say about the book.

My impression of Babywise was 'isn't that the book where they say to put your baby on a schedule and only feed them every 4 hours?', but that isn't totally true. That method is described in Babywise as hyperscheduling, and they actually recommend against doing it. Instead, Babywise recommends 'routine feedings within a preset, flexible time frame.'

The book also recommends not feeding babies 'on demand,' but they take a very narrow view of what on demand feeding is. For most parents and Pediatricians, on demand feeding involves following your babies hunger cues and feeding your baby when he or she is hungry. But that doesn't mean feeding every 30 minutes or an hour, since if you are doing so, you are likely misinterpreting your baby's crying.

The Babywise approach is called Parent Directed Feeding (PDF), and the reason it works so well for so many parents, is because it is really what most parents are already doing when they are feeding on demand and recognizing true hunger cries and cues.

I have the second edition of Babywise (and it is currently published in a 3rd edition that was revised yet again), and I think it must have some big changes from the first edition. In the section on 'How Often Should I Nurse My Baby', instead of a strict schedule, there is a lot of language about flexibility. This includes that 'you will feed your baby approximately every 2 1/2 to 3 hours', but also that there may be 'less and sometimes slightly more' time between feedings. And Babywise does recommend an average of 'eight to ten feedings a day' which is similar to the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation of 8-12 feedings a day.

Babywise also advises about the correct number of soiled and wet diapers to look for as a sign that a child is getting enough to eat and the 2nd edition has an expanded chapter on 'Monitoring Your Baby's Growth.' The book also incudes easy to use checklists and charts to carefully monitor your child's feedings and the number of voids and stools they have each day.

I didn't like one of their examples they use of a child who was failing to thrive though. The baby, Jeffrey, was breastfeeding every 1 to 1 1/2 hours and wasn't gaining weight well. Their solution was to put him on a three hour schedule with formula feedings. But the problem was not that he was breastfeeding too frequently, but rather that he likely wasn't breastfeeding effectively, either because mom didn't have a good supply of milk or because he wasn't latching on or sucking properly.

Although he gained weight on formula, was soon sleeping through the night, and the mother was able to breastfeed her subsequent children, what she really needed was someone to help her breastfeed Jeffrey effectively. He may have needed a formula supplement if he was dehydrated, but he also needed someone to help mom get him to latch and suck properly and perhaps pump to increase her milk supply. Simply changing the child to formula feeding on a schedule was not a success for PDF and Babywise or for Jeffrey.

You should look elsewhere if you are doing Babywise and are having problems breastfeeding. The book is quick to recommend offering formula supplements and offers little help otherwise. Once you get your milk supply up and are breastfeeding effectively by getting advice from more traditional breastfeeding experts, like a lactation consultant, then consider returning to Babywise if you are really committed to it.

And maybe even consider waiting until your milk supply and breastfeeding is well established before even starting Babywise.

Babywise Cycles

One of the main concepts of Babywise is that you separate your babies activities into three basic cycles of feedings, waketime and sleeping. Other books, including Secrets of the Baby Whisperer echo this advice about seperating feedings from sleeping.

In addition to these daily cycles, Babywise divides a baby's first year into four phases, during which your child will go progressively longer between feedings and will sleep longer at night.

So what do you do if your baby isn't sticking to a schedule between feedings or is waking up at night? Babywise says to let them cry.

Crying, Crying and more Crying

Babywise is right that not all cries are cries for hunger, but when they are, you should feed your baby. And if your baby isn't hungry, but is still not quicky settling down, you should respond to their cries and pick them up. I don't think that responding to a baby's cries 'suppresses' them and leads to a spoiled baby or a child who is emotionally unstable.

Most of the Babywise advice on crying is inconsistent though. In one section they talk about that 'when you baby awakens, don't rush right in to him or her. Any crying will be temporary, lasting from five to forty-five minutes.' And in another place it says that 'there is no precise limitation for normal periods of crying.' These statements will lead some parents to think that they can let their babies cry indefinitely, or at least until they are due for another feeding.

In other parts, Babywise talks about 'picking up and holding your baby' when he is crying. And in the problem solving section discussing a 2 and 3 week old who cries 1 hour after a feeding and seems hungry, Babywise says to 'feed him.'

Babywise Controversies

I also don't think that PDF is such a 'new and major paradigm shift.' In fact, it is very similar to the EASY approach that is outlined in Secrets of the Baby Whisperer, although Babywise did come first.

And I don't like all of their bashing of attachment parenting. It may not be for everyone, but why do they think it is so harmful? Babywise should stick to its own advice and 'Remember, different opinions abound. Learn and discern what is best for your family. Then make a commitment with no excuses needed.'

The author himself is one of the other things that drives some of the controversy surrounding Babywise. Unlike most other books, you won't learn anything about Gary Ezzo's credentials from On Becoming Babywise. You would have to do some searching elsewhere to discover that he is 'an enigmatic, 50-something, evangelical Christian minister'* and that he heads Growing Families International, a for profit conservative Christian organization. I don't think that there is anything wrong with a Christian minister writing parenting books, but it should be a little clearer in the books who the authors are.

One of the main Babywise points I disagree with is that babies 'are not capable of establishing stable sleep/wake cycles on their own.' Instead, I think that they do this naturally and it is up to parents to learn not to interfere with the process, but you don't need Babywise to teach you that.

Another controversy is that many of the facts and studies presented in the books are not backed up with any scientific evidence.

If you do follow the Babywise principles, be sure to mention it to your Pediatrician, so that he or she can closely follow your baby's growth and development and perhaps schedule a few extra visits, especially in your baby's first month of life. And be sure to read the whole book before applying any of its principles or you may make some big mistakes. For example, the section on growth spurts and the need for extra feedings is in the back of the book in the Parenting Potpourri section, instead of where they talk about understanding a baby's cries. If you didn't read all of the way though and your breastfed baby wanted to eat more frequently, you might have stuck to your routine and not increased your feedings to increase your milk supply.

Should you raise your children with Babywise? That's up to you. Are you comfortable with letting your baby cry a lot? Do you believe the statement that 'Yes, you can hurt a baby by picking him or her up too much.'? If you answered yes to both or either statement, then Babywise may be for you.

Do you want to try a method that Dr. Sears, a popular author and Pediatrician, calls 'probably the most dangerous program of teaching about babies and children that I have seen in my 25 years of being a pediatrician'?*

Is Babywise dangerous? For most parents and babies, the answer is probably no. The book does do a good job of teaching parents to recognize whether or not a baby is getting enough to eat and signs to look for that might indicate that he was getting dehydrated. And some babies may get dehydrated doing Babywise, but it also happens to parents following an Attachment Parenting approach or just feeding on demand. It is unclear what the effects are of letting a younger child cry without being responded to though.

And I think that many parents who 'do Babywise' don't follow all of the advice anyway. Most simply concentrate on the 2 1/2 to 3 hour schedule, which is when the average baby wants to eat anyway. Our own surveys show that most newborns are going 2 1/2 to 3 hours between feedings, and I doubt that all of these parents are doing Babywise.

Reading the reviews at amazon.com of people who really liked the book show statements like 'use your instincts and adjust the schedule time as your baby's needs indicate', 'we didn't follow the book 100%,' 'we deviated from some of the advice in the book,' and 'of course, I don't agree with everything in the book, but it provides a framework to where you and your family can pattern your lives to predictable patterns and keep the sanity of the enitre family in check.'

Another reviewer states that 'obviously there will be days and times when things need to be altered or changed,' but Babywise doesn't say that at all.

Now you don't have to follow or believe in all of the points in every book that you read, but there is only one real concept in this book, sticking to a feeding/awake/sleep schedule even if it means letting your baby cry to stick to your schedule, and if you don't follow that, your not really doing Babywise.

Beautiful Girls Dancewear!

Girls Dancewear
Anyone who has a little girl taking dance classes knows how nerve-racking her first recital can be, and not just for her, but for parents as well!  I just googled "first dance recital," and found blog after blog written by moms and dads about their daughter's first performance.  There are so many adorable photos of little girls all dressed up in bright colored tutus and leotards!
I couldn't believe how many anxious parents had near-disasters with finding girls dancewear that was comfortable and pretty!  Obviously the costume is important. Dance recitals are a big deal for the whole family, and you want your little ballerina to look and feel like a superstar in her dance clothes! Having a beautiful outfit to wear on stage will help your little girl overcome stage fright and feel like a real performer.  Sometimes it's hard to remember that she's just a little girl, and I don't know about everyone else, but I totally remember how much I hated wearing itchy tights and leotards to ballet!  That's an enormous distraction when you're little!

At Sophia's Style, we have a large selection of girl's dancewear and girls dance clothes that are high quality and comfortable for girls to wear.  You can find cute clothes for her to wear to her dance classes, and gorgeous outfits for her to wear to her performances, so she can have fun and dance, and you can relax and enjoy the show!

It's Almost Fall...

Girls Outerwear
The fall season is well on it’s way, school will be starting in just one short month! We all know what that means, things are going to get hectic real quick. With the beginning of every new semester comes new activities and homework for the kids, and they’re going to need your help with everything! With all of these things to keep parents busy, who has time to come up with dinner ideas? Well, you’re all in luck, because I’ve recently begun learning how to cook, and I’m all about finding tasty dishes that are super easy to make. So far, my favorite is pesto mozzarella chicken. It’s delicious and so simple, it only takes a few steps and about a half hour to cook. Here’s what you need:

- Four boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- One half a cup of basil pesto
- One half a cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
- One tomato

(You may want to adjust these amounts for larger families, this would serve four people as-is)

Step 1:  Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Step 2:  Put the chicken breasts and pesto in a bowl together, toss them until the chicken is covered, and then lay the breasts out in a pan.
Step 3:  Bake them for 20-25 minutes.
Step 4:  Lay thin slices of tomato over top the chicken.
Step 5:  Sprinkle mozzarella over top (you can do this to taste)
Step 6:  Put it all back in the oven for about 5 more minutes

I think this entrée goes well with angel hair herb pasta or just a simple side of spinach salad with vinaigrette dressing and a baguette.

Girls Rothschild Trench
Now remember, fall is going to come on quick, so get ahead of the game and check out the selection of girls outerwear at Sophia's Style.  We've already got a great collection of super stylish girls coats and baby girl jackets.  I'm especially in love with this gorgeous red Rothschild trench, it's the kind of coat that can be dressed up or down, and will look perfect with all her fall and winter outfits.

History and Fashion, These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

Girls Slips
Here's a bit of trivia:  petticoats have been around since before the year 1585!  Do you know what that means?  It means they work.  What else do we still use from the 1500's?  Fire?  The wheel?  I have another interesting fact:  petticoats weren't used at all during and for awhile after WWII, due to rationing, but they were brought back in 1947 by Christian Dior's New Look.
So there you have it, petticoats are tried and true, and most importantly, endorsed by Christian Dior.  If you've got a wedding, pageant, or any kind of special occasion coming up and you want to get her ball gown silhouette just right, head over to Sophia's Style and check out our girls petticoat slips, girls slips, and flower girl petticoat slips.  If you haven't chosen the dress yet, make sure to look at our selection of special occasion dresses, they're gorgeous and totally unique.

How to Avoid Hearing "We're Booored!" | Sophia's Style

This summer the weather has been downright moody in Nebraska!  One day it's hot and sunny, the next it's pouring rain, and another it'll be so humid you can barely stand to step outdoors!  Keeping energetic kids busy when they can't play outside is never easy, and I should know, I used to be the nanny for five children.  When you've got a vacuming to do, laundry to wash and fold, and dinner to cook, you just can't afford to give the kids your full attention.  My favorite way to keep them busy was to set them up with an activity they could play together.  Here's one they really loved:

The game is called "What Changed?"

  • Have the kids sit in one room, and choose one to stand up and have everyone look very closely at what they're wearing and how they're wearing it.
  • Have the child leave the room and change something about his or her appearance (like maybe take off their socks or turn a baseball cap backwards).
  • Have the child return to the room and let the others guess what changed!
  • Whoever guesses right can go next, or, to avoid anyone being left out, you could have them all alternate.

Girls Sleepwear
Once you get this game going, you can just listen to them play while you work on other things!  Even if you don't have many kids yourself, this is a good activity for times when you might be hosting a sleepover or party of some kind.

Speaking of sleepovers, Sophia's Style carries a great collection of girls sleepwear and baby girls sleepwear, so she can look as adorable and stylish at bedtime as she does all day!

What is reflux in babies/toddlers mean?

Reflux is the word used to describe what happens when the stomach contents come back up into the gullet or into the mouth.
There are very important differences between gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) and gastrooesophageal reflux disease (GORD) when describing the difference between reflux in babies.
These differences can be summarized as follows:
GOR is normal, GORD is a disease.
GOR refers to the passage of stomach contents from the stomach into the oesophagus (spelt esophagus in the US).
It sometimes enters the throat or mouth, and in infants it is often ejected from the mouth. Some degree of GOR is a normal occurrence in individuals of all ages, especially during and immediately after meals. It is usually normal if it causes few, infrequent symptoms, or none at all. In contrast, at all ages, GORD is present when reflux causes symptoms that are troublesome, severe, or of longstanding; and/or if reflux causes a complication, the most common being damage to the oesophagus ("oesophagitis").
The diaphragm is the muscle which separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. As the oesophagus passes through the diaphragm, the diaphragm acts like a valve - stopping stomach contents from going backwards up the oesophagus. Doctors refer to this valve mechanism as a sphincter. (see diagram below)
Sometimes the valve action isn't as strong as it could be. In babies it is because the sphincter action of the diaphragm isn't fully developed. During the first year of a baby's life, the sphincter action gradually gets stronger and their chance of having reflux decreases.
Around 50% of babies will get some reflux but in only a small percentage of these is it a real problem. At the age of 10 months the number is down to about one in twenty babies.
So the large majority of infants, GOR is a normal occurrence that they will outgrow with time, the introduction of solid foods, and assuming the upright position, i.e., walking. Such infants are almost always happy even after regurgitating.
Reflux in babies is very common so don't worry. If it is a concern then visit your GP and have a chat; in the meantime try and keep your baby upright as much as possible whilst feeding, playing and sleeping.

Ninety Degrees?! Sounds Like Swimsuit Season...

Girls Swimwear
Well, we're halfway into summer, and it's officially peak pool season!  Here in Nebraska the temperatures are hitting the ninties almost everyday, and kids are just begging their parents to take them swimming.  At Sophia's Style, we've got everything your girl will need to hit the waters.  Our bright, beautiful collection of girls swimsuits and baby girls swimsuits includes something for everyone.  We've got tankinis, bikinis, one pieces, and more, all in a variety of colors and patterns.  No matter what her taste is, she won't have trouble finding the perfect suit, towel, or cover-up in our collection of girls swimwear

And guess what else!  This time of summer, tons of our swimsuits have already gone on sale!  We've got more markdowns than ever on the swimwear, so even if she already has one swimsuit, now might not be a bad time to pick out a back-up.

Back to school season is just about here!  I'm a little sad this year, I've finally finished school, and now there's no excuse to buy new books and school clothes.  Luckily for me, I snagged a job that allows me to live vicariously, so I can get my school shopping fix from the office.  We just got loads of girls school uniforms in, and they're so crisp and sharp looking.  There's literally everything she'll need, from pleated skirts and jumpers to slacks and polos.  We even have a collection of activewear, so she won't be wanting to feign illness to get out of gym this year!

Girls School Uniforms
School's just around the corner, and you don't want to go broke buying your girls school uniform from expensive department stores and catalogs.  Sophia's Style has affordable uniforms that will last through semester after semester.

Communion Gowns: Girls In White

There are, traditioally speaking, exactly three occasions in a western world girl's life for which she is allowed and expected to wear an extravagant white gown:  baptism, first communion, and her wedding.  Since there are only three, it's important that they all be as beautiful and memorable as possible.
Whether you prefer an elegantly simple high-necked satin princess cut, the most ornate beaded ball gown number you can find, or any gorgeous style in between, you'll be sure to get her a top quality first communion dress if you order from Sophia's Style.  Every communion gown we carry was made with extra special care and attention.  Our selection is all hand-picked by parents who know from experience how important quality really is when it comes to special occasion clothing for their children.

Communion Dress

Now don't forget (as if any self-respecting reader of fashion blogs ever would) accesories are what makes an outfit.  We've got a stunning collection of communion headpieces, and not only that, but you can find some ladylike long white gloves that will have her looking like she just stepped out of a Vogue communion editorial.

Pageant Dresses For Your Princess

Pageant Dresses
Children's pageants can be a fun and exciting opportunity for young girls to develop confidence and poise at an early age.  Not everyone realizes that pageants have evolved drastically past the traditional and superficial "beauty contest," and into very well organized programs that specifically target the growth of a number of very important skill sets.  Each catagory of a pageant has a purpose that goes far past the contestant's aesthetic qualities.

The most basic of pageants normally includes at least one interview portion, a talent competition, and a formal wear competition.

Pageant Dresses
The interview is, in my opinion, the most useful catagory.  In most cases with older age groups, the interview is done privately with the judges.  Children are scored on their ability to articulate intelligent and well thought-out answers to a variety of questions.  The ability to be confident and cool under interview pressure is a skill that will aid your child enormously in the real world.

The talent competition is a great catagory because it gives your child a chance to perform in front of an audience.  The benefit to having them performing at such a young age is that they will likely be showing off a talent that they are very proud of, so it will be fun for them!  This is a great way to reinforce positive feelings about being in front of large groups at an early age.  Not everyone is a natural born performer, so this provides the chance to put more introverted children in a friendly environment where they can learn that they have no reason to be afraid of an audience, and they can overcome some of their shyness.

The formal wear competition is perhaps the most fun for little girls because it's basically the greatest game of dress-up they've ever played.  What little girl doesn't love trying on mommy's pretty shoes and jewelry?  Well, in a pageant they get to wear their very own formal outfit!  In the formal wear portion, the children will most likely be asked at least one question on stage, and they'll get to answer while feeling beautiful in their pageant gowns.  This is great for self-esteem and it's excellent practice in public speaking, which is something they will no doubt have to do at some point in their adult life.

At Sophia's Style, we carry a vast array of gorgeous girls pageant dresses.  If you're entering your girl in a children's pageant, you're going to want something beautiful, so she can feel like a princess and have fun.  Pageants can get pricey, even if you get sponsorships, which is why Sophia's Style is a great place to go for pageant dresses.  We have quality gowns at reasonable prices.

When to call the doctor for your baby

It's normal for new parents to worry about their baby's health. Even if you can see that your newborn is strong and sturdy, babies are small and vulnerable and need our protection. But how do you know when something's really wrong?
You know your baby best, so trust your instincts -- and call the doctor if something doesn't feel right. Here are some key areas to keep an eye on.

Temperament

If your baby seems like his usual playful, happy and is feeding well, he's probably not seriously ill. A baby who has a runny nose and a big smile is probably not as sick as a baby who has a runny nose and is lethargic.

Unusual crying

If your baby suddenly starts crying more than usual and you can't comfort him in the usual ways, or if his cry is weak or unusually high-pitched, he may be seriously ill. The opposite is also true -- if your baby seems unhappy and doesn't cry but is unusually inactive and difficult to wake up, call your doctor.

Appetite

How hungry your baby is will vary from day to day. But if he's hungry he should feed vigorously. A baby who tires easily from sucking or loses interest in nursing or feeding may be sick. Also, if you notice your baby spitting up more than usual, with more effort, or if the spit-up is greenish in color, call your doctor.

Abnormal bowel movements

Young babies, especially breastfed babies, often have very soft or liquid bowel movements. But if the stools become extra watery, your infant may have diarrhea.
Monitor his bowel movements and see whether the diarrhea continues. Make sure he's breastfeeding or bottle-feeding as often as usual so he doesn't get dehydrated. Your baby should wet a minimum of six diapers a day. If he seems lethargic and stops having bowel movements or begins to have small, hard, or dry bowel movements or if his stool is streaked with blood or mucus, or has the consistency of jelly, call the doctor.

Difficulty breathing

If your baby's breathing is labored or if he's having trouble breathing at all, get help immediately.

Fever

Although fever in a baby is a signal that he's sick, the fever alone usually isn't worrisome. A baby can have a low-grade fever and be seriously ill, or a high fever and be only mildly ill. But if a baby under 3 months of age has a fever of 100.4 degrees F or higher, he should be examined. If an older baby has a fever but appears completely well otherwise, observe him for a day to see whether he develops other symptoms.
If you're still in doubt, call your healthcare provider anyway. It's important for you to get peace of mind, and it never hurts to check with your doctor.

Easter Dresses For Little Ladies

Girls Easter Dress
Is there anything sweeter than our collection of girls Easter dresses and baby Easter dresses at Sophia's Style?  I doubt it, I've been browsing the selection and everything looks so lovely in pastel satin, silk, and lace, with sashes and bows and full skirts.  These dresses are so classically beautiful, they remind me of the architypical southern belle style, ladylike and perfect down to the tiniest details.

One thing the debutantes definitely got right was the petticoat, which is the key to getting the kind of skirt volume these gorgeous dresses deserve. Luckily, Sophia's Style carries a collection of girls petticoats so you can find just the right one to complete her easter ensemble.
