My officemate is already getting excited about playing Christmas music at work. I told her it's too early, and then I started browsing our girls outfits, looking for blog inspiration, and came across this baby girl outfit. How cute is that?! The leggings look like candy canes, and the tunic is decorated with gingerbread cookies! Now that I've looked at it, I want to listen to Christmas music and eat cookies. *Sigh,* I give in. As soon as the weather gets cold, I can't help but think of the holidays.

Does anyone have big plans this year? The more I look at our girls outfits, the more I miss going to my grandparents' house when I was a kid. I loved sitting in my grandma's kitchen near the oven while she made dinner. I always had some kind of Christmas sweater or dress that was really warm and cozy, and my mom always made me let her curl my hair. I may be a bit of a girly-girl, but that doesn't mean I like having my hair fixed. I'm pretty sure we had a fight everytime she came anywhere near me with a brush, a curling iron, or (heaven forbid) a bottle of hairspray.

I hope everyone else is as excited as I am for Christmas this year! We only have a couple more months, it'll be here before we know it!

Summer Swimming Pool Game For Kids | Sophias Style

It may seem like winter is never going to end, but I promise summer will be here before we know it! It’s time to find the perfect girls swimsuits and plan all those fun warm weather activities we love so much. No doubt one of their favorite things to do is swim in the pool. While lounging in the sun on a beach raft is our idea of “swimming”, for kids it’s like any other activity. They need structure and direction or they’ll get bored, fighting and tears will break out and suddenly everything is wrapped in chaos!

This year try playing Pool Change Drop to keep them occupied. Empty out that change bucket into the pool while all the kids stand outside of the water. At the count of 3, let all the kids jump in and dive for change. After all the loose change has been collected, count it up and see who has the most. Then they can stash their earnings in the piggy bank for a rainy day!

Another great variation on this game is to mark plastic tokens (you can find them at party supply stores) with different amounts using a black permanent marker. Toss them in the pool and let the kids dive. At the end they can add up the amounts they’ve collected. Later on take the kids to the store and let them pick out one toy or item that is worth that amount. It might be a good idea to make the highest token amount be no more than $1, or this game could get expensive! Save the tokens and you can use them again for the same game next year.

99 Cent Embroidery!

Personalized Baby Clothes

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make a cent symbol on my keyboard. Is that weird? I feel like I never see that symbol anymore, it seems like one of those things that disappears from life after grade school, like long division and recess.
Anyhow, how was everyone's Halloween? Mine was great, I went to the masquerade on Friday- it was gorgeous, everyone was dressed to the nines and had really elaborate masks, and I did enough dancing to ensure that I'll be walking with a limp for about a week. Then, I spent all of Saturday drinking coffee on the patio of a little cafe downtown and people watching with some friends because the weather was beautiful! On Sunday night we went to a friends' house and handed out candy to all the trick-or-treaters, they looked so cute!
I was sort of sad this morning, I love Halloween, and it's already over. Then I remembered that it's time to start planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas! I really want to get all my holiday shopping done this month, so next month won't be chaotic.

Lend A Helping Hand With Homework

As the school year treks onward, those kids school uniforms might be showing some wear and tear and your kids are probably growing tired of all the schoolwork. A little encouragement and structure from Mom and Dad can help them get on the right track again! Here are a few tips from the Child Development Institute on how to help children with homework and maximize their potential as students:

Turn off the TV  Everyone knows the TV can be a HUGE distraction. Set a rule that when it’s study time, it’s also “no TV” time (for Mom and Dad too!) After homework is complete, you can even make plans to watch a favorite show or movie together as a whole family.

Establish a Routine. Try to organize the household into a routine – most kids thrive on structure. Serve dinner at a standard time and set aside homework time on a schedule every weeknight. Of course this can be a challenge with extracurricular activities. On these days, they can do homework before dinner instead of after.

Organize study and homework projects Get a large calendar and hang it on the wall in a central family area, such as the kitchen or living room. Have your child mark exam dates in one color, reports that are coming due in a different color, etc. This way they can see what is coming up and plan accordingly. It’s also great preparation for high school and college!

Pink Patent Boots

 Happy Monday everyone! I've had three cups of coffee and I get to blog about shoes, it's a good day! This weekend was glorious, I went to a very fancy party on Friday night, then woke up bright and early on Saturday to go get family picures done at a orchard near my parents' house. I arrived at 8:10 (only 10 minutes behind schedule, not bad for a Saturday morning), and was greeted by my brother's girlfriend who was wearing a very sparkly piece of jewelry on the most important finger! She asked me to be one of her bridesmaids, and then we got our family pictures taken with her, because she's going to be my sister-in-law! I'm so excited. After the pictures we went out to breakfast for a mini-celebration, then my mom, my new sis (Brittany) and I went to see a florist and talk about wedding things. Brittany has already picked out colors, and I'm thrilled because she has fantastic taste, and she showed me a photo of the style for the bridesmaid dresses- they're going to be beautiful- once again, she has fantastic taste.

 Anywho, how was everyone else's weekend? Hopefully great, this fall has been perfect so far, we couldn't ask for better weather in Omaha. They're patent leather, and the little flowers on the straps are super pretty and have tiny rhinestones in the centers.

Easy Carrot Place Setting For Kids | SophiasStyle.com

Here’s an adorable Easter craft that creates no mess – she can even do it in her fancy Easter dress! It only takes about five minutes to complete (there are only two steps!) and makes your table look bright and festive for the Easter holiday! Try it this year and wow your guests, big and small.

You will need:
• Orange paper napkins
• Green plastic utensils
• Green pipe cleaners


1. Fold a paper napkin into a rectangle and place a set of utensils at the lower left corner. Then roll up the utensil set in the napkin, working your way towards the right side.

2. Wrap a few green pipe cleaners around the napkin and utensils at the top of the “carrot” and twist them to secure.

If you don’t have green pipe cleaners, you can use green wrapping ribbon instead. Curl the ends with scissors for a springy look!

School Uniforms

Is it just me, or is the skirt in the photo to the left way too pretty to be part of a uniform that's required by school administration? I thought school administrators were supposed to be cruel and stuffy, they're supposed to despise children and seek to make students' lives as unbearable as possible, and they're certainly not supposed to have good taste. Looking at that picture, I'm starting to think I've been mislead. Apparently school administrators don't have bad taste and hate students after all. That is a seriously cute skirt, I'm tempted to go try it on myself.

I've actually always thought school uniforms are chic. There's a Catholic Jr. High school across the street from the University I attended, and I was always a little jealous of how put-together all those kids look in their crisp blazers and plaid knee-length skirts. Especially because- as much as I love fashion- if you ask me at 7 a.m., I'll tell you I love sleeping more. I was always dressed in a jumble of sweaters, tights, and boots. I like to pretend it looked chic, but probably I just looked homeless.

What’s The Right Age to Begin Dance Classes? | SophiasStyle.com

So your little girl loves to whirl and twirl around the room to the radio and you couldn’t get her to stop singing songs from the latest Disney movie if you tried. Is now the right time to enter her in dance lessons? There is no magical age where a girl is ready to begin dance classes, because everyone matures at different ages. Be aware of her interests – If you notice that she’s always performing for family and friends, then it might be a good idea to bring up the subject of dance lessons. A lot of moms recommend 2-3 years old as a good age to start beginner’s classes. This makes sense, as a lot of little girls will not show a natural interest in dance until their toddler years anyway. The main idea is, don’t force it if she’s disinterested!

Happy Tuesday, it's not Monday anymore!  I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love velvet, and I am so thrilled to be seeing it in women's fashion this season! Velvet has that glossy but soft look that's glamorous and cozy at the same time (such combinations are rare where fashion is concerned).

Little girls are so lucky, velvet never goes out of style for them. Normally we see trends pop up on the runways and in high fashion, then they trickle down through ready-to-wear, and about two to four seasons later we see them in little girls' fashion. When I think of streamers as party decorations, I automatically think of a large roll of crinkly crepe paper in bright colors. Well streamers have just taken a sophisticated turn! As you may know, I am getting married soon – in fact, 8 weeks from today is the big day! Everything is really starting to come together. The reception hall is booked, we’ve selected music and the bridesmaid and flower girl dresses are ready to go.

I have a secret! And I'm terrible at secrets, so here it is: There's going to be a pretty sweet sale on girls outerwear and baby girl outerwear starting tomorrow! Watch your inboxes for the email, or check our homepage for the code. Anytime you get a sale on outerwear, you should buy. Coats are a necessity, and you have to have more than one, because they get worn everyday, and even a high quality coat will look tired if you don't give it a day off every once in awhile.

Also, don't forget about girls dress coats, she's going to need something to go with all those pretty holiday dresses this winter. I recommend buying a size up, because we have some especially nice Rothschild little girls winter coats that are definitely nice enough to be worn for several years.

I noticed we've put up some girls snow pants, and those count as outerwear! Remember when you got snow days off at school, and you could stay home all day and build snow men and make snow angels?

In other news, has anyone noticed that wide leg jeans are coming back? I'm not thrilled about this. I don't like things obstructing the view of my shoes. Viva la Jeggings!
